ramblings of playing through DQ1

Hello, i'm nave and I just finished the HD2D remake of dragon quest 1 and it really made me think a lot about JRPG genre that i'd like to share. Unfortunately i didn't take like any screenshots when plaything through this game because i'm fucking stupid so your just gonna have to imagine a lot of the things I describe, with that out of the way lets begin. So when naming a character I more often then not just use whatever the default however I don't think there is one for our protagonist so my second option is then naming them after a dead guy. I started doing this a few years ago when getting into the souls series and when I pick a dead person its actually just random but it is usually affected by recency bias so I named him after the legendary secretary of state Henry Kissinger. Can you even think of someone more worthy of carrying the linage of Erdrick? So a couple of things I noticed when playing is the art direction is incredible. Every enemy feels alive (even the undead ones) the slimes actually just can go band for band with pikachu and probably win. I knew going in that you only have one party member and I was curious about how that would work, It works super well this game especially in the early game is so tightly designed. No obstacle feels like its to much for you to overcome you might need to rethink your equipment load out or find an item in the world but I hardly ever felt I was being thrown into a pack of dogs that were eating me.

Speaking of equipment lets talk about it, I feel like in most modern games levels matter more then equipment load outs. Not to say they don't matter in a lot of newer games but usually picking the one with the bigger number is not the worst way to go. That is not always the case in DQ1, you should early sell equipment in this game because you might need what special ability it has in order to triumph over a boss. The mirage fight I was struggling hard. However I talked to pall Squidward (shout out btw) and he gave me some advice about what I should equip as well as finding the magic barrier scroll so I could survive his wind attacks. I found the saviors staff and was able to figure out how to beat them all in one fell swoop. I've not played the original but I can totally envision how these events could play out similarly back in the day. I had a tone of similar moments like this in the latter half of the game and it really is a testament to the games design that it an create stories like this without a single bit of dialogue.

It's easy to imagine how this series took off the way it did I can already imagine how you take what's here and expanding in ways to keep it going i'm excited to see what else this series has in store for me. But that is it for now I give dragon quest 1 a rating of nothing because this isn't a review, and I hope to write about the remake of 2 at some point where we follow Henery Kissengers descendent Juice WRLD when he has to save the world as well. Also I personally didn't use the spell that much but i was told Crackl was dope as fuck.
